A St. Helena Island man has been cleared of murder and attempted murder charges stemming from a shootout outside a nightclub on the Beaufort County island two years ago. The Beaufort Gazette reports that a jury deliberated about seven hours Thursday before returning the not guilty verdicts in the case of 27-year-old Lucas Miles Morgan.

Eighteen people have pleaded guilty to participating in a drug ring that distributed cocaine and prescription drugs on South Carolina's south coast. The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that 32 people were named in a federal indictment two years ago that charged them with participating in the ring operating in Beaufort County.

According to a report obtained from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, the 17-years-old was jumped because of an argument he got into with the child of a maintenance worker at the Bluffton House Apartments Homes.

Authorities in Beaufort County are looking to identify a man who stole a pair of sunglasses from a local store. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office says the theft took place Sunday afternoon at a Sunglass Hut store, located at 1252 Fording Island Road in Bluffton.

Bluffton town Manager Marc Orlando has appointed Frank Hodge deputy town manager and Shawn Leininger as director of growth management, the town announced this week. Hodge, the former director of growth management, is now deputy town manager with responsibilities of inter-governmental relations and special projects.

Plans to remove or trim trees around the Hilton Head Island Airport are raising concerns the project could harm the remnants of a Civil War fort. The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that Beaufort County is condemning airspace above properties allowing trees that interfere with clear flight paths to be trimmed or removed.

While Bluffton and Beaufort County continue attempts to secure funding for the realignment of a portion of Bluffton Parkway, some residents are staunchly opposed to the idea. Known as Bluffton Parkway Phase 5B, the realignment would straighten a 2.5-mile stretch of the road between Buck Island Road and Buckwalter Parkway.
